The only settlement of the island, the homonymous Kastellorizo, is located around the natural harbor and consists of the districts of Pigadia, Chorafia and Mandraki. Impressive are the double and triple old mansions along the coastline in front of an imposing red rock. The houses of the settlement are authentic examples of traditional Dodecanese architecture. They are built amphitheatrically around the sea and are characterized for their uniformity, due to common materials such as local stone, Asia Minor wood, blacksmiths, tiles from Antalya and Marseille.
Kastellorizo is connected to Rhodes by ferry. It is also connected by ferry to the Turkish city of Kas by ferry, which the route made almost every day. Public transport is provided by a taxi and a minibus (during summer), which operate the route for the airport. However, the island has a network of natural paths and the visitor explores it by walking.
It gained worldwide prominence in 1991 when the Oscar-winning film Mediterraneo was filmed there.
