The Sanctuary of Apollo is located west of Chora, on the road leading to Panormos. In antiquity, it was the most important place of worship of the patron saint and patron god of the island, while the place was the political and religious center of Kalymnos. Also in this area there were religious buildings, such as the temples of Apollo and Asklipios, theater, bouleuterion, gymnasium, inscriptions, statues of gods and statues of mortals dating back to the 3rd and 4th century BC. Today, only two major Christian churches, the Christ of Jerusalem and Agia Sophia, which were erected in the 5th and 6th centuries, are preserved.
