Virgin Mary of Tsikouns

It is a large three-aisled basilica with carved and gold-plated iconostasis. In the erection of the church were used architectural members (columns, capitals, inscriptions, reliefs, structures) from the sanctuary of Apollo. Some of these items are kept in prominent places in excellent condition.

Designation

The church of Virgin Mary of Tsikouns is also called Virgin Mary of Chora or Virgin Mary "Tsoukouon" or Virgin Mary "Charitomeni" or Virgin Mary "Kecharitomeni".

It was built in the 18th century (specifically in 1794) in the center of Chora (today's Village), when fear of piracy ceased as residents began descending from the Castle.

During the Turkish occupation, the church kept official Kalymnos census and tax documents. Today, a small collection of old stamps, stamp seals and historical documents and church relics is preserved.
