The monastery of Saint John Alarkas (or Alargas) or Makria is located on the west side of the island, about 7 km from Emborio and at an altitude of 386 meters. It is the most important pilgrimage of the island of Chalki and is dedicated to the Stem of the Holy Prodromos.
According to tradition, the monastery is associated with the sponge divers of the island, as they considered Saint John their protector when they dove at sea. Also, some of the icons that dominate the interior of the temple are donations of great people who were involved in sponge-fishing.
Each year, on August 29, there is a big feast in honor of Saint John Alarka, where many pilgrims gather. There is a feast with songs, dancing and traditional dishes.
