Fountain of Eleousa

Gizani fishes, which hosted by the fountain, is an extremely rare, protected species of fish. It is a small carp fish and is particularly resistant to weather changes, both in low winter water temperatures (about 10 ° C) and high in summer (about 30 ° C). Drought and garbage are a threat to Gizani fish. Reproduces in spring and summer. Its maximum length reaches 10-12 cm, but we often find 3-5 cm long. It is gray in color and feeds by algae, aquatic invertebrates and insect larvae.

The Gizani fish was discovered in 1900 in the wetlands of the island by an Italian professor Alessandro Ghigi, who first collected it and named it. The fish is considered a small survival champion because it manages to live in the extremely volatile stream environment.

It is located in the village of Eleousa, a settlement of Italian settlers, created during the Italian occupation. It is a huge circular cistern with a fountain in the center, created for the needs of the first settlement.
