Monolithos Castle is located outside the picturesque Monolithos village of Rhodes and is 75 km from the city of Rhodes. The Venetian castle is built on the top of a rock about 100 meters. It was built in 1480 by the Knights of St. John, to provide protection to locals from pirate attacks. It was one of the four strongest fortresses of Rhodes, due to its location and excellent fortification.
Today, the external fortification of the fortress is maintained in a very good condition, while its interior is widely ruined. Inside the castle enclosure are tanks, portions of the towers and arcades, as well as the chapel dedicated to Saint Panteleimon. The castle is accessed by a staircase carved into the rock, while the panoramic view is particularly impressive and fascinates every visitor.
